COLD FINISHING with JOHNATHON SCHMUCK!

Class Dates:  September 11 - 14, 2008

$700 per student for 4-day class

Limited to 12 students.

Students will be provided with several small raw pieces; but are

encouraged to bring a piece of their own to transform.

Ditore Glass Works offers a new cold shop with

wet belt sander, diamond flat laps, polishing

lathe, Spatzier engraving lathe, Merker cutting lathe,

Raimondi tile saw, Suhner Rotoferra (large and small).

"A piece of glass is not really done until it has been ‘finished’ with some
coldworking. From cleaning up an edge or a lip, to fully altering the outer
surface of the glass, there are many different ways to coldwork a piece."

In this class we will be exploring the most rewarding aspects of coldworking
and finishing,.   Emphasis here will be on learning how to use a machine
with comfort, confidence, and competence so that the grinding process
proceeds with ease.  We will look at techniques which allow  one to achieve
some very satisfying and professional finishes in a very efficient
manner

We will be taking very raw glass pieces down to an exquisite smooth matte
finish with the Merker lathe, the belt sander, the angle grinder, the
sandblaster, hand lapping, the hand engraver, and in the kiln with  fire
polishing.   We will be discussing strategies and options that can make
coldworking fun and painless, what it takes to set up one’s own  coldshop,
and all the aspects of safety to indeed make coldworking free of any
pain.
